Mr. Smetko most recently spent 12 years on the upstream investment staff at EnCap Investments L.P., the leading provider of private equity growth capital to the independent sector of the U.S. oil and gas industry since 1988.  During his time at EnCap, the firm raised 9 institutional investment funds totaling $33bn based on a track record of consistently generating superior returns across multiple industry and hydrocarbon price cycles. 

 

In his most recent role as a Managing Director at EnCap, Mr. Smetko was the primary relationship manager and a key board member on seven portfolio companies representing roughly $2bn of aggregate equity commitments.  In such capacity, Mr. Smetko was responsible for assisting the portfolio companies with the evaluation of strategic decisions involving capital budgets, acquisitions, divestitures, capitalization, risk management and personnel before recommending such action to the broader board of directors and/or the EnCap investment committee for final approval.  In addition to portfolio management, Mr. Smetko’s responsibilities also included deal origination/sourcing and fundraising. 

 

Prior to becoming a Managing Director, Mr. Smetko served in varying junior and mid-level roles on EnCap’s upstream investment staff.  As an Associate and Vice President, Mr. Smetko’s roles revolved primarily around analytics and execution.  As a Director, Mr. Smetko transitioned into a more senior role focused on portfolio management and deal sourcing. Mr. Smetko began his career as an Analyst in Citigroup’s Investment Banking Division, where he focused on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions in a wide range of industries.  

 

After initially attending the University of Virginia for a year and a half, Mr. Smetko transferred to Southern Methodist University where he graduated summa cum laude from the school’s BBA Honors Program with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance.  Mr. Smetko currently serves on the advisory board of Southern Methodist University’s Alternative Asset Management Center and is a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, the ADAM Energy Forum, Young Professionals in Energy and the CFA Society of Dallas-Fort Worth.
